Scholarships for Physics Majors

The Herman Y. Carr Scholarships

The Herman Y. Carr Scholarship is awarded annually to two Rutgers physics majors who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in honor of Herman Y. Carr, who was a professor of physics at Rutgers until his retirement in 1987. The scholarship winners are announced at the Departmental Awards Banquet in April, sponsored by the Rutgers Society of Physics Students.

The Mary Wheeler Wigner Memorial Scholarship

The Mary Wheeler Wigner Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Rutgers physics majors who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The scholarship was established in memory of Mary Wheeler Wigner, who was a professor of physics at Rutgers. The scholarship winners are announced at the Departmental Awards Banquet in April, sponsored by the Rutgers Society of Physics Students. A photograph of Prof. Wigner is shown above.

The Noemie B. Koller Scholarships

The Noemie B. Koller Scholarship is awarded annually to two Rutgers women physics majors who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in honor of Noemie B. Koller, who is a professor of physics at Rutgers. The Robert L. Sells Scholarships

The Robert L. Sells Scholarship is awarded annually to two Rutgers physics majors who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in honor of Robert L. Sells, who was a professor of physics at Rutgers. The Aryabhata Endowed Award in Astronomy

The Aryabhata Endowed Award in Astronomy is given annually to a physics and astronomy undergraduate who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, has demonstrated outstanding academic performance in astronomy. The Prize was established in 2019 by an anonymous donor in honor of Aryabhata, a significant figure from the classical age of Indian mathematics and astronomy (c. 500 CE).

The Mohan S. Kalelkar Award

The Mohan S. Kalelkar Award is given annually to one or more Rutgers women physics majors who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The award winners are announced at the Departmental Awards Banquet in April, sponsored by the Rutgers Society of Physics Students. A photograph of Prof. Kalelkar is shown above.

The Paul L. Leath Award

The Paul L. Leath Award is given annually to one or more Rutgers undergraduates who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have written an outstanding senior thesis. The Richard T. Weidner Physics Prize

The Richard T. Weidner Prize is awarded annually to one or more Rutgers undergraduates who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic performance in physics. The Prize was established in 1977 by anonymous donors in honor of Prof. Richard T. Weidner and his wife. Prof. Weidner was a distinguished physics faculty member at Rutgers for 41 years. The Richard J. Plano Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, inaugurated in 2000.

The Richard J. Plano Outstanding Teaching Assistant (TA) Award is given annually to Rutgers physics TAs who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding teaching excellence. The award, which includes a cash prize, was endowed in 2000 by Richard J. Plano, who was a professor of physics at Rutgers until his retirement in 1999.
