Topological spin excitations in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnetic materials

Topological materials have been a recent focus of the condensed matter physics community. In this talk, I will summarize our recent inelastic neutron scattering studies of ferromagnetic van der Waals honeycomb lattice materials, focusing on studying the relationship between magnetism, spin-lattice coupling, and evidence for topological spin excitations in honeycomb lattice CrI3. We discuss the role of the next-nearest-neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and Kitaev’s interaction plays on the spin wave spectra of CrI3. We show evidence that the ferromagnetic order in CrI3 is weakly first order instead of standard second order magnetic phase transition.
