Moiré Materials Magic
Speaker: Allan H. MacDonald, University of Texas, Austin
Abstract: Moiré pattern are ubiquitous in van der Waals materials and can now be fabricated with considerable control to realize artificial two-dimensional crystals in which the number of electrons per effective atom can be varied over a substantial range. I will survey some of the moiré material systems currently under study, and some of the materials physics that can potentially be simulated in this new context. I will focus a part of my presentation on the special and interesting case of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, in which very slow electrons can be superconductors, two-dimensional metals, or Chern insulators, depending sensitively on band filling, moiré twist angle, and the proximity of nearby electrical gates.
