CMS Silicon Detectors Today and Tomorrow: The Current Pixel Detector and the Future High Granularity Calorimeter
Speaker: Rachel Yohay, Department of Physics, Florida State University
Abstract: Silicon detectors have been used extensively in CMS throughout the LHC run, with the entire tracking volume enclosed within the detector solenoid comprised of 200 square meters of such detectors. Due to their intrinsically high signal to noise, radiation hardness, and ability to be mass produced, silicon detectors will play an even bigger role in the Phase 2 upgrade of CMS for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). In this talk, I will first discuss the CMS pixel detector and refurbishments either achieved or planned for the ongoing LHC Long Shutdown 2. I will then introduce the six-million-channel High Granularity Calorimeter being constructed to replace the CMS endcap calorimeters for the HL-LHC run, focusing on the novel silicon sensor design, current prototyping results, and quality control program. Both detectors are examples of the versatility of silicon sensors, showing how they can be deployed in different collider environments presenting different operational challenges.
