Entanglement in critical quantum spin chains with defects

Entanglement, one of the quintessential properties of quantum mechanics, plays a central role in the development of long-range correlations in quantum critical phenomena. In particular, measures of entanglement such as the von-Neumann entropy contain signatures of universal characteristics of the underlying critical system. In this work, we investigate ground-state entanglement in critical quantum spin chains described by conformal field theories (CFTs) in the presence of defects. We compute entanglement entropies in the Ising and free, compactified boson CFTs for different defect classes. We show that the behavior of the entanglement entropy depends crucially on the location of the subsystem relative to the defect. Finally, we describe physical realizations of certain defects in the free, compactified boson model using quantum electronic circuit lattices.
