Ultrafast visualization of the electron dynamics and optical nonlinearities in high-intensity laser matter interactions

The subject of high-intensity, ultrashort laser matter interactions has received significant attention recently because of its fundamental importance as well as key applications such as table-top soft x-ray generation and laser-based particle accelerators.
In this presentation, I will talk about the experimental and computational study of high-intensity laser matter interactions such as laser filamentation [1] (self-guidance of a high intensity laser pulse) and high-order harmonic generation [2] (table-top UV and soft x-ray generation) performed at my lab. In particular, our group develops/implements state-of-the-art time-resolved diagnostic techniques such as time-resolved interferometry [3] and single-shot frequency domain holography [4] to visualize the ultrafast electron dynamics and optical nonlinearities and thus to understand the fundamental dynamics of laser matter interactions. Furthermore, we support and guide our experimental work using numerical simulations of nonlinear Schrödinger-type equations [5, 6].
