What are majorana zero modes and why should you care?

Date and Time: Wednesday, April 27, 2022, 03:30pm - 04:30pm

Speaker: Sankar Das Sarma, University of Maryland

Abstract: I will describe the search for Majorana zero modes, which are predicted exotic bound states in certain types of superconductors.  These Majorana modes enable fault-tolerant quantum computation because of their peculiar topological properties allowing non-Abelian braiding.  I will discuss the underlying theory and the experimental progress toward Majorana laboratory realization.
