Ultrafast photoinduced spin Crossover Phenomena in transition-metal ions
Speaker: Michel Van Veenendaal
Abstract: Crossovers between low- and high-spin states occur in transition-metal ions due to the competition between the crystal field and the Coulomb interactions. Transitions between different spin states can be induced by femtosecond pulses in the visible light leading to a spin crossover on a timescale of a few hundred femtoseconds. Transitions on cobalt in Prussian Blue analogues and on divalent iron are discussed. Dissipation in the system is important to obtain a full relaxation into the new spin state. For a full relaxation into the metal-centered quintet state of divalent iron, long-range Coulomb scattering needs to be included. The spin crossover leads to a drastic change in the local electronic structure, which can be studied using time-dependent X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering.
