Speaker: Tom Banks (Rutgers University)

Abstract: I will show how the universal properties of the density matrices of causal diamonds leads to 1)A very economical theory of early universe cosmology, with few free parameters and no "Transplanckian" problems. It has predictions different from conventional inflation, which are so far outside the scope of observation. 2)An understanding of simple properties of black hole and de Sitter entropy, which lead to an easy resolution of the "firewall paradox". 3)A demonstration that quantum gravitational length fluctuations of the magnitude suggested by Verlinde and Zurek (and previous authors) are very likely there. Both 1 and 3 lead to some as yet undone but seemingly straightforward calculations and extensions, with real phenomenological consequences.
