Abstract:  LHC is just one of several data-intensive endeavors running or planned in fundamental physics. From a modern data science perspective I will explain its unique opportunities and challenges. For example, first-principle simulations based on perturbative quantum field theory have to become ten to a hundred times faster and a perturbative order more precise - with the help of neural networks. Only then can we hope to apply simulation-based inference, again enabled by modern neural networks. An old dream of collider physics is to publish data sets with unfolded detector effects, guess what makes this possible? Finally, LHC can search for many more signals than we can ever turn into theory hypotheses, so which modern techniques will come to our rescue…?
