It is with enormous pride and excitement that we celebrate the news that Professor Eva Andrei has received the Kavli Prize in Nanoscience.
The Kavli Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious scientific honors, widely regarded as being at the level of the Nobel Prize in terms of international significance and impact. Awarded only every two years by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Kavli Foundation, and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, it recognizes scientists whose discoveries have fundamentally advanced our understanding of nanoscience, astrophysics, and neuroscience.

Eva Y. Andrei is a Board of Governors Chaired Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. An experimental condensed matter physicist internationally recognized for her work on low-dimensional electron systems, Eva is best known for pioneering discoveries related to twisted bilayer graphene, including the observation of van Hove singularities and flat bands at small twist angles, the renormalization of the Fermi velocity, and the observation of nematic charge order.
Her groundbreaking contributions have helped define the modern field of quantum materials and nanoscience. Her 2009 discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene was recognized by Science magazine as one of the Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of the Year.
Eva’s many honors include the inaugural Mildred Dresselhaus Prize in Nanoscience or Nanomaterials from the American Physical Society and the French CEA Medal of Physics. She has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Physical Society (APS).
In addition to her scientific leadership, Eva has served the broader scientific community in numerous distinguished roles, including Chair of the Division of Condensed Matter Physics of the APS, Chair of the Physics Section of AAAS, and Chair of the Condensed Matter and Materials Research Committee for the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies.
We are especially proud that Eva earned her PhD at Rutgers and has continued throughout her extraordinary career to elevate Rutgers Physics on the international stage through her groundbreaking science, mentorship, and leadership.
