Rutgers SPS Chapter Wins National Recognition as 2022-23 Outstanding Chapter by the SPS National Office
Dec 20, 2023
The Rutgers chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won an Outstanding Chapter Award from the SPS National Office. This is the 5th time in the last decade that the chapter has been recognized for its excellence as a top-tier student-led physical sciences organization, a designation given to fewer than 10 percent of all SPS chapters at colleges and universities in the United States and internationally.
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association designed for students and membership is open to anyone interested in physics and related fields. SPS operates within the American Institute of Physics (AIP), an umbrella organization for professional physical science societies.

Professor Ron Ransome involved in a surprising neutrino scattering measurement that has been named one of the "top 10 Breakthroughs of the Year for 2023" by PhysicsWorld.
Dec 11, 2023
The measurement was performed by Fermilab's MINERvA experiment, of which Ron is a founding member. The new study discovered that neutrino scattering could be used as a robust probe of the internal structure of the proton.
Electron scattering has been used since the 1950's for this purpose, determining the proton size and the charge distribution of its constituent quarks.
As PhysicsWorld writes "If this [neutrino] scattering can be measured, it would not only complement electron scattering experiments in probing proton structures; it may also provide important new insights into how neutrinos and protons interact."
Congratulations to Ron and the MINERvA team for this important new result!
